In recent years, printed circuit board manufacturers have made it possible to produce PCBs of different shapes, thicknesses and colors.
I thought of using this possibility to create a PCB with the shape of Italy and with 20 RGB LEDs, one for each region, to display different information:
The ItalyMap project was born. Thanks to a Wemos D1 Mini development board (based on the ESP8266 chip), I was able to fetch information from public repositories on the Internet. In particular, I used the Github repository of our Civil Protection to get Covid19 daily cases for each region.
I then wrote an Arduino sketch that – based on defined thresholds, displays the values with different colors:
All the files needed to build the project are available in a Github repository.
I also published a video with detailed explanations on how I made it… enjoy!
